You get to thinking about an old school friend, and on a whim look them up online. In a few years, they’ve travelled the world, got the “most gorgeous, kindest partner” and just bought their first house while you’re still in your little home town working an unfulfilling 08:30-5 with only your buzzing refrigerator to come home to.
Everywhere we are told to “live life to the fullest” and to “give 110 percent” because “YOLO”. Is it just me or is this a goshdarn slap in the face at the best of times? My high school’s motto was “Carpe Diem”. How could I Seize the Day stuck between 4 concrete walls?!
Or my personal favourite.. “live each day as if its your last”. As someone with a chronic illness, I’m not even going to start.
But even for those that are healthy, life has a way of slipping into a steady averageness that some might call a “rut”. Again, with social media it is easy to compare ourselves and find ourselves coming up short, leading us to feel threatened or lacking.
Life’s nature is to ebb and flow. When we struggle against this we can get frustrated and depressed. If we try and try but nothing changes, maybe we should not resist, just accept that this is a “downtime” on our rollercoaster. I am a strong believer in the universal laws that state we get out what we put in. If you are constantly comparing yourself in the belief that other people’s lives are better, you will ALWAYS find examples that reflect this.
Instead..
-Try to shift your consciousness to one of positivity, and give thanks for the wonderful opportunities and people that ARE coming your way, and BELIEVE that they are.
-If you are finding social media is getting you down, take a break! Its actually becoming quite trendy. Try “unfollowing” those you know always seem to be showing off, or if their posts make you feel inferior in any way.
– Go easy on yourself. Understand that this is your life and no one else’s. We are all different, it is okay to be you, and you are meant to be exactly where you are now.
